PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - Friday marked the beginning of hundreds of flight cancellations at major airports across the country as the Federal Aviation Administration begins reducing air traffic by 4%.
If the government shutdown continues, flight reductions are expected to increase to 6% by Tuesday, Nov. 11, 8% by Thursday, Nov. 13, and 10% by Friday, Nov. 14.
On Friday, Transportation Secretary Sea Duffy warned the percentage could rise between 15% and 20% if the shutdown extends beyond Nov. 14.
Both Portland International Airport (PDX) and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA-TAC) are among the 40 airports affected.
A PDX spokesperson reported 12 canceled flights Friday, six arrivals and six departures, although the reasons for cancellation may vary.
