Minneapolis Council Member Jamal Osman says he is "safe and unharmed" following a carjacking near East Lake Street.
Osman says he was parked and on a call with his sister when he was carjacked by two young people around 8 p.m. Monday near Portland Avenue and East Lake Street.
"Minneapolis Police responded quickly to the incident. I want to thank them — and also Chief [Brian] O’Hara and Mayor [Jacob] Frey — for reaching out and checking in tonight," Osman wrote in a statement.
A source close to the investigation tells the Minnesota Star Tribune that Osman was threatened with a handgun and mace by the suspects, who took off with his car, which was recovered by police around 10:30 p.m.
Last week, Osman won reelection as the representative for Ward 6, just south of downtown Minneapolis.
