Authorities have arrested a 40-year-old man after police said he sucker-punched an officer during a routine call for a disturbance over the weekend.

Daniel Morris is charged with the attack on the officer on Hanover Road in Newtown, authorities said.

Newtown Officer Hyvarinen, who was working alone, was speaking with Morris about the disturbance when Morris put his hands up in a sign of surrender but then punched Hyvarinen with a closed fist without warning, authorities said.

Morris then grabbed the officer and put him in a headlock, police said. When Hyvarinen broke free, Morris punched him again.

Both men suffered cuts to their faces during the incident, police said. Authorities treated Morris at the scene and took him to Danbury Hospital, where he was medically cleared.

Morris is charged with assault on public personnel, interfering with an officer / resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct, authorities said.

He was held on a $75,000 bond.
