A police sergeant in a Somerset County town has been charged with shoplifting multiple times, according to news reports and court records.
David R. Canica, 50, a 27-year police sergeant in North Plainfield, stole merchandise under $200 on Nov. 3, Nov. 9, Nov. 10, and Nov. 19 out of Hillsborough.
According to TapInto, Canica stole items totaling more than $213 from Weis Markets on Route 206. He was identified through his shopper's Rewards Card, the outlet said.
North Plainfield Police Chief Alan McKay said Canica was suspended without pay on Nov. 21.
"This decision was not taken lightly or without a careful review of all the facts and circumstances," the chief said. "It appears Sergeant Canica has not lived up to our agency’s CORE values of honesty, Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Excellence.
"The accusations and arrest of Sergeant Canica are extremely disappointing to me and all the members of this agency. The accusations against this officer do not reflect the character of the hardworking men and woman of the North Plainfield Police Department that serve honorably each and every day and live up to our agency CORE Values."
