A alcoholic brute who subjected his partner to months of violence has been locked up. David McKenna routinely locked his girlfriend in his home while he visited his mum or went out for cigarettes.

The 53-year-old threw away her make up and wouldn't allow her to dress in revealing clothes. Teesside Crown court heard that when the woman tried to move out of McKenna's home, in November, last year, he kicked her in the ribs before pinning her down and punching her in the head. He then stamped on her legs.

McKenna appeared in court on Monday on video link from Holme House Prison. Joe Hedworth, prosecuting, said that when the two went out to celebrate McKenna's birthday, on December 15, "she was sober; he was paralytic".
