DETROIT, MI – The Detroit Zoo has a new giraffe joining the herd.
Zara, a 7-year-old giraffe, gave birth to a healthy female calf at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, the zoo announced in a Facebook post Monday.
The mother is OK and the calf is standing strong and is hitting all her important milestones, the zoo said.
The new calf is currently bonding with her mother and has not yet been named.
The giraffe building at the zoo will be temporarily closed so the two can have time to bond uninterrupted.
Alongside her mother Zara and father Jabari, the new calf joins the close-knit herd at the zoo: female Kivuli and male Mpenzi.
“Wild giraffe populations face serious threats, and we’re proud that the giraffes at the Detroit Zoo serve as ambassadors for their cousins in the wild,” zoo off
