A suspected murderer has been named after a 20-year investigation into the killing of a woman at a seafront shelter using DNA from a cigarette butt. Jennifer Kiely, 35, was found dead by the Sussex fire service in the early hours of January 22, 2005. She had been stabbed multiple times, had an injury to the back of her head and her body had been set on fire. The attack was thought to be sexually motivated, and while two suspects were arrested in 2005, no one was charged with Ms Kiely’s murder.

DNA was recovered from the scene, including from a cigarette butt, that contained a full profile of a man whose profile also matched DNA found on Ms Kiely’s body and in her blood, but he did not appear on the national database.
