CHARDON, Ohio (WOIO) - The Chardon Fire Department has installed a Safe Haven Baby Box at their station, providing parents a secure space to surrender newborn babies anonymously.
The temperature-controlled box allows parents to give up their baby without facing legal consequences under Ohio’s Safe Haven Law.
Parents can surrender an infant no older than 30 days to designated safe locations, including hospitals, fire stations or police stations.
This latest installation is located on the southeast side of the Chardon Fire Department at 110 South Hamden St., in the alley drive between the station and Pilgrim Christian Church.
How the system works
To access the baby box, parents park in a designated spot in front of the fire station and walk through the front entrance, which remains open
