FLORENCE, Ala. ( WAFF ) - A Lauderdale County woman is now facing 51 counts of identity theft, stemming from an investigation that started in 2023.

Over $45,000 taken over the span of a few months from dozens of victims.

Florence Police officer Joshua Meza says Ashley Phillips was working at Cash Express in Florence and used client information to open new loans and keep the money for herself.

That’s where the 51 counts of identity theft come into play.

There is also one count of theft of property. All of felony charges as of now.

“They saw an uptick in loans being taken out,” Meza said. “That brought some suspicion so they did an audit on it. They found out from there that the audit showed that there were not things matching up together.”
