HONOLULU (Island News) -- "What happened was just wrong. Where are the people getting this acid from?" It's a question many are asking this weekend including Ernest Carvalho, chair for Downtown-Chinatown in Honolulu.
On Friday evening, Aug. 8, District 1 patrol officers responded to an assault complaint in the Chinatown area.
Witnesses reported that a 30-year-old man was crossing the street (near Smith and Hotel Street, around 10 p.m. on Friday) when an unknown suspect approached and threw an unidentified liquid in his face causing severe burns.
The Honolulu Fire Department later identified the liquid as sulfuric acid.
New security cameras have recently been installed at many intersections. Some wonder, are they being properly monitored?
Carvalho told Island News Saturday, "Security
