RALEIGH, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — On Saturday, three Mooresville firefighters — Lieutenant Scott Hauck, Lieutenant Marcus Perkins, and Senior Firefighter Eric Keller — were honored for their brave actions during Hurricane Helene.
On September 27, 2024, as members of the Mooresville Fire Swiftwater Rescue Team, they were deployed to Ashe County in response to Helene. Amid the rising floodwaters, a car was taken by the current, trapping two people inside.
Despite extreme conditions, the firemen navigated the floodwater by boat and successfully rescued both victims.
The firemen received the North Carolina State Firemen's Association Valor Award. The award was presented at the NCSFA Annual Banquet in Raleigh by Fire Chief Curt Deaton, who also serves as president of the organization.
