FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — The Fayetteville City Council on Aug. 5 approved a major overhaul of the city’s recycling program, voting 5-1 in favor of an all-in-one, cart-based system.

The city will replace 18-gallon green bins with 65-gallon blue carts. Automated trucks will take recyclables to a processing facility, rather than the landfill, where materials will be properly sorted, saving money and expanding participation.

Peter Nierengarten, Fayetteville’s Environmental Director, said the system is expected to save the city $1.4 million.

“We see this as a much more equitable program in terms of offering a more universal service to our residents and to our businesses,” Nierengarten said. “It allows much broader participation in the recycling program.”

Recycling rates will rise 9.
