Emmerdale has faced a barrage of Ofcom complaints from outraged viewers.

The broadcasting regulator has disclosed that the ITV soap attracted 279 complaints following last Tuesday's (August 12) episode.

Disturbing sequences depicted Vinny Dingle (Bradley Johnson) suffering a homophobic assault from an individual called Mike (Macaulay Cooper) after meeting through an online platform.

An Ofcom representative stated: "Complaints objected to violent and sexual content before the watershed."

Vinny had opened up to Mike regarding his uncertainty about his sexuality, assuming that the stranger was experiencing similar struggles, reports the Daily Star .
