Emergency personnel suspended the search for a missing swimmer along Lake Michigan in Highland Park on Sunday evening, authorities said.

Citing the strength and speed of currents on Lake Michigan, the city said it stopped recovery operations in the search for a missing swimmer who disappeared on Saturday afternoon.

At around noon on Saturday, the Highland Park fire and police departments were called to Openlands Lakeshore Preserve at Fort Sheridan along Lake Michigan for the report of a distressed swimmer struggling in the water, city officials stated in a news release.

Authorities said they are considering the search a recovery mission as of 5 p.m. Saturday. Recovery efforts resumed Sunday morning but were halted at around 3:30 p.m.
