Kiyah Scott’s family was already in the process of moving out of Newark due to violence when tragedy struck.
Scott, a 21-year-old mother of a toddler, was among five victims struck by gunfire on Nov. 15, at the corner of Chancellor Avenue and Leslie Street around 7 p.m., the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.
Three victims, Scott, 10-year-old Jordan Garcia and 19-year-old Masi Rogers, died as a result of the shooting. Two others, 11-year-old Jayceon Garcia and a 60-year-old man, were injured.
Annette Ryan, Scott’s mother, said she “dreaded” each time her daughter would go to Chancellor Avenue, where her friends would gather. Concerns over safety had pushed her family to plan to relocate.
