A look at the recall product.

Shoppers in several states are being urged to take a second look at a popular snack after a packaging mix-up led to a new allergy warning.

Mondelez Global, the maker of Ritz crackers, said that it is voluntarily recalling 70 cases of Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches sold in eight states, including New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The concern centers on cartons that may contain peanut butter sandwiches even though some individual packs inside are labeled as the cheese variety, creating a risk for people with peanut allergies.

The recall covers a single product configuration: 27.6-ounce cartons of Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches in a 20-count format, with Best When Used By dates of Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026, and Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026, and an “AE” plant code printed on the package. The company says the outer cartons are labeled correctly and include an allergen advisory that the product “contains peanuts.”

The affected cases were shipped to a limited number of retailers in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Alabama.

No other Ritz products are included in the action, and Mondelēz says there have been no reports of illness or injury tied to the issue so far. The company describes the move as a limited recall taken out of an abundance of caution after the distribution error was discovered.

Only the peanut butter sandwiches in the specified cartons and code dates are part of the recall. Cartons that contain only Ritz Cheese Cracker Sandwiches, or other Ritz varieties with different dates or plant codes, are not affected.

Consumers who have a peanut allergy are being told not to eat the product and to throw out any cartons that match the recalled description. Those with questions can call Mondelēz at 1-844-366-1171, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The company says the recall is being carried out in coordination with the US Food and Drug Administration.
