LAKE LURE, N.C. — After nearly a year, Western North Carolina is still feeling the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene.
The Town of Lake Lure announced on Thursday that the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge will be taken down due to significant structural damage from the storm.
"After thorough assessments by two independent engineering firms, it was determined that the bridge is beyond repair and cannot be restored," wrote the town.
The demolition will start on Aug. 18.
Lake Lure Flowering Bridge officials said they will be trying to salvage balustrades, plants and artifacts to use in future gardens.
"We are heartbroken at the loss of the Bridge, but we promise to come back with new gardens, classes and events for the community," wrote Lake Lure Flowering Bridge in a Facebook comment.
