KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - Two nine-year-old boys were returned to their parents after video showed them setting a car on fire, according to police.

Kearney Police said the Kearney Volunteer Fire department was called to a car fire Wednesday at 3:50 p.m. in the 3600 block of Ave. X in east Kearney.

Police officers, firefighters and the state fire marshal uncovered video evidence which showed the two boys stealing items from unlocked cars on that street. Authorities believe the boys then intentionally set the vehicle on fire.

Kearney police said the 2008 Chevy Malibu was a total loss. Police did not release information about how the fire started.

The Department of Health and Human Services and the Buffalo County Attorney’s office later released the boys to their parents.
