The crash remains under investigation in Virginia.

Turns out the I-95 crash that had Virginia troopers searching for a mystery pickup driver… didn’t involve a pickup at all.

Virginia State Police now say the truck that was originally blamed for sparking Tuesday’s multi-vehicle crash in Spotsylvania County simply wasn’t there.

In an updated release Wednesday morning, VSP put it bluntly:

“FURTHER INVESTIGATION NOW INDICATES THAT THERE WAS NO WHITE PICKUP INVOLVED IN THE CRASH.”

That’s a sharp turn from the early reports that had troopers looking for a hit-and-run driver after several people were taken to the hospital.

Here's what state police say actually happened.

The crash started just before 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2, in the southbound lanes near the 120-mile marker in Spotsy.

Troopers say a Nissan Kicks hydroplaned on wet roads, slammed into a guardrail, spun out, and then hit a Toyota Highlander.

Seconds later, a tractor-trailer crashed into the Highlander.

Two passengers inside the Highlander were hurt, including one person with serious injuries, according to VSP.

Someone inside the Kicks suffered minor injuries.

And that’s it — no pickup. No hit-and-run. No fleeing driver.

Just a wet roadway, a hydroplane, and a chain-reaction crash that kept troopers and medics busy during the morning commute.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
