PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - To gear up for early voting in a few months, the Pitt County Board of Elections is getting new voting machines.

Elections Director Dave Davis says by mid-August, they’ll be replacing fifty Automarks, which are handicap accessible machines that help voters who are blind, disabled, elderly, or in need of assistance.

“Anybody can use it,” Davis says, “but that’s the main purpose, to allow people to mark their ballot without any assistance. They can do it on their own.”

The machine has a touchpad with brail around the buttons and provides options to read the ballot out loud, enlarge the screen, and change font size.

Davis says this offers a sense of freedom for voters who might otherwise rely on help.
