Federal officials say a man living in Connecticut was using fake names to hide that he'd previously been deported to Guatemala and returned illegally.
Marcos Ismalej Ixpancoc, 39, was charged with illegally reentering the country and making false statements on federal immigration forms. He lives in Stamford but is a citizen of Guatemala.
Court records outline a pattern of false identities. Investigators said border agents first stopped him in Arizona in 2006. He told them his name was “Marcos Hernandez Lopez” and claimed he was from Mexico. Agents sent him back to Mexico through a voluntary return.
In 2012, border agents stopped him again in Texas. This time, officials said he used the name “Jose Ernandez” and claimed he was from Guatemala. He was removed to Guatemala that September.
Federal officials said Ixpancoc resurfaced in 2023 when he applied for legal permanent residency and work authorization. He filed under his real name and used a Stamford address. Fingerprints tied him to both earlier arrests.
Investigators said he also lied on the forms. Court documents state he denied using any other names, denied being ordered removed, and denied ever being removed from the country.
Prosecutors said he also filed a petition under the Violence Against Women Act and claimed abuse by a US citizen son. Officials noted the son was two years old at the time he filed the petition.
Ixpancoc signed each form under penalty of perjury.
If convicted, he faces up to two years in prison for unlawful reentry and up to 10 years for making false statements, according to sentencing guidelines.
